Introduction to the Karst Dynamics Laboratory,
MLR
1. General Purposes
1.1 Based on the law of movement and transfer of matter and energy in earth
system, to study the dynamic mechanisms and processes of
karst formation;
1.2 To develop the theory of modern karstology through interdisciplinary
research, and provide scientific information for solving a
series of
resources and environment problems in karst areas;
1.3 To exert the advantage of karst in China, and attract scholars from home
and abroad to make cooperative research, to bring up
scientific and
technical experts with high qualification, and eventually
to form a research
center of modern karstology.
2. Main Objectives
2.1 To further reveal the mechanisms of physical, chemical and biological controls on
karst
processes, and establish relevant physical and mathematical
models;
2.2 To reconstruct, with high resolution, the environmental change in South China since
200,000 B.P.;
2.3 To evaluate quantitatively the role of karst processes in the source and sink of
global
green-house gas;
2.4 To develop the karst hydrodynamic model with three dimensions and nonlinear flow,
and solve problems in exploiting and harnessing karst
water;
2.5 To study the mechanisms of karst cave development and karst collapses;
2.6 To understand the running processes of karst ecologic system, and to seek the approach
to control and rehabilitate karst rocky desert.

5. The Facilities for the KDL
The facilities for the KDL include two parts: one is in the field, and the other is in the
indoor
lab.
In the field, eight monitoring sites distributed in different environments of China have
been set up
to understand the running processes of karst system under different conditions of geology,
climate, hydrology, and vegetation. The instruments are CO2-gas meter, pH-meter
with
temperature sensor, alkalinity-meter, rain gauge, flow-meter, and conductivity meter. In
each
month or sometime in each two hours, CO2 partial pressure, release flux of soil
CO2,
temperature, pH-value, bicarbonate, rainfall and discharge of the karst system are
monitored.
In the lab, an experimental setup for carbonate rock dissolution is available. An isotope lab for
analyzing carbon-14, d 13C,
3H(T), D, d 18O, and U-content
is open to public. The instruments
include MM-903 mass spectrometer, LSC-LBI liquid display device, 4-channel a -spectroscopy
system, amongst others.
