FIELD SYMPOSIUM IN AUSTRALIA 4 TO 18 DECEMBER 1992
Buchan--Naracoorte--Nullarbor
Humid temperate impounded karst , sub-humid temperat syngenetic karst ,
arid temperate karst
INVITATION
A field symposium of IGCP299 will be held in Australia from 4 to 18
December 1992.This will allow members of IGCP299 to examine a wide range of karst types in
southern Australia and to relate these to karst landforms already studied by the project.
Papers dealing with similar karst types abroad can be presented during the symposium
, and thus comparisons and correlations will be facilitated. We invite you to attend
and encourage you to submit your ideas and papers at an early date.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
Three principal karst types are widespread in Australia:
1.Small impounded karst or karst barre developed in Palaeozoic limestones of
the Eastern Highlands of Australia. Examples of this type are
Jenolan , Cooleman Plain and Buchan.
2.Syngenetic karst developed in aeolian calcarenites of Tertiary age in coastal Southern
Australia. Examples of this type are Naracoorte , Bat Ridges , and Margaret River.
3. Arid zone karst developed in limestones of widely varying age
from Tertiary to Palaeozoic. Examples of this type are the Nullarbor
Plain , the Kimberleys , the Barkly Tableland and the Cape Range.
This combined field symposium and excursion will visit one example of each type of
karst-- Buchan, Naracoorte and Nullarbor. These karsts all lie in the cool temperate
part of Southern Australia , and experience a predominantly
Mediterranean climate. Annual rainfall ranges from 100mm on the Nullarbor to
about 800mm at Buchan. Landscape relief ranges from less than 5m on the
Nullarbor to about 100m at Buchan.
Buchan is a typical impounded karst with an area of about 50 km2 and
over 350 caves. Recent work there suggests that many of the karst features may be of
Tertiary age, and there is thus a long geomorphic history of valley incision
and aggradation which may reflect uplift history. There are well
developed tourist caves here with permanent springs.
Naracoorte is one of the best examples of karst developed in aeolian
calcarenite. The extensive caves and cenotes ( numbering around 100 ) are formed in
lithified beach ridges of late Tertiary to Pleistocene age. Extensive formations and
marsupial fossil material have led to the development and expansion of
tourist caves here.
The Nullarbor is Australia's most extensive karst(200,000km2) but has
surprisingly few caves for its area (approx.220). It does , however ,
contain several large caves (up to 11km long) which descend to the watertable at
about 100m depth. There are well developed halite, gypsum and
ancient calcite formations in the caves , as well as
extensive saline lakes. Remains of aboriginal
occupation include flint quarries and some of the oldest parietal are in the world.
At present a World Heritag nomination is being prepared for the Nullarbor Plain.
PRELIMINARY ITINERARY

Melbourne University , afternoon drive to Buchan. Stay at
"Homeleigh"(caving field house).
Day 2-3: Visit to karst sites at Buchan, including tourist caves and some wild caves in
Buchan Reserve. Karst spring monitoring and surface karst features at Murrindal.
Chronology of caves and terraces. Management issues.
Day 4: Drive from Buchan to Warrnambool. Overnight at cabins.
Day 5: Warrnambool to Naracoorte karst via Ewen Ponds and other karst cenotes. Cave
management and water pollution. Tourist cave development. Overnight at
cabins.
Day 6: Naracoorte to Clare via Murray Bridge and Nuriootpa. Overnight at Clare caravan
park (on-site caravans or cabins).
Day 7: Clare to Ceduna. Meet South Australian NPWS staff. Overnight in cabins.
Day 8: Start Nullarbor Plain section. Ceduna to Eucla via Head of Bight
and Weebubbie Cave. Camp at Eucla coastal dunefield.
Day 9: Eucla to Abrakurrie Cave. Camp at Thampanna Cave.

and discussion re World Heritage listing for Nullarbor karst. Overnight in cabins.
Day 14 ,15: Ceduna to Adelaide. Excursion terminates at airport or city centre.
COST PER PERSON
AUS$2250 includes all publications , transport , meals
and accommodation from the start in Melbourne to the finish in Adelaide
(single room supplement $600). This cost estimate may have to be revised if fuel
prices and vehicle costs increase before December 1992. Note that
you will be responsible for arranging and paying for your transport to
Melbourne and from Adelaide to your point of origin. We will arrange one
night's motel accommodation (at your expense-approx.$120 for
two nights , twin share) in each of Melbourne and Adelaide.
All participants will be required to provide proof of
adequate travel insurance; we can organize this at the time of booking(approx. $120
per person for three weeks).
TRAVEL AND VISAS
We will use on-site caravans or cabins wherever possible and especially
on days with long drives. These provide single beds on a shared room basis
with bathroom facilities. Electric power (240v) is available for charging batteries
(lights , flashguns ,video). On the Nullarbor we will be camping and we
will supply tents , foam sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Meals
served will be continental breakfasts , sandwich lunches and cooked
evening meals. Tea , coffee and fruit juices will be served. Alcoholic beverages will be
at your expense. The Naracoorte area and the Clare valley of South Australia
produce some of Australia's best red and white table wines.
Personal luggage will be restricted to one large soft rucksack or bag and a
day pack. We will supply caving helmets and electric lights. You will have to
bring protective clothing(overalls or similar) and boots. Ladders and ropes will be used
on a few short pitches of less than 15m.
Registrants who are not Australian citizens should contact their travel
agent or the Australian High Commission in their country regarding the
need for a visa to enter Australia. Invitations will be arranged by the
Organizing Committee.
