Prof. D.C. Ford visited the KDL, Guilin

At the invitation of the Karst Dynamics Laboratory (KDL) in Guilin, Prof. D. Ford of McMaster University, Canada, FRSC gave a series of lectures on karst from April 25 through 26, 1999. These lectures include:

Ford-Liu.gif (65868 bytes)(1) Isotopes of calcite with thermal water and cold water origin in Jewel Cave and Wind Cave (South Dakota, USA), and their comparison with those in precipitation source region of Caribbean

(2) Alpine Karst at 66o north latitude (Mackenzie Mt, NT. Canada)

(3) Seasonal change of humic acid and fulvic acid in soil and cave dripwater under the soil, and their occurrence in speleothem

(4) Industrial pollution in the dolomite area near Niagara Waterfall

Every lecture was followed by warm discussions on topics such as paleoenvironmental reconstruction with karst records; karst formation and engineering geological problems in permafrost regions; origin of luminescense in speleothem; and karst hydrology in dolomite. About 20 colleagues from the KDL and the Institute of Karst Geology took part in the events.

As a member of the academic committee of the KDL, Prof. Ford also examined the work done by the KDL, and gave valuable comments and suggestions.

On April 27, 1999, Prof. D. Ford visited the Crown Cave and subterranean River system, and was welcome by the manager of local tourism authority.
